DESCRIPTION:

The stories of children around the world are staggering. Throughout the world millions of children are orphaned through war, through AIDS, through extreme poverty. Every seven seconds a child dies from a preventable disease. Drug addiction runs rampant. Children are sold into prostitution or forced to become child soldiers. They’re lost and they have no place to live. These children have no hope. And these are the ones that are on the heart of God.

The Children at Risk Discipleship Training School will focus on the needs of children around the world and the issues that put them at risk — sex trafficking, poverty, AIDS, abuse, child soldiers, and broken families. We will also focus on the heart of God who promises to be a “Father to the fatherless, who sets the lonely in families.” (Psalm 68:5,6)

For three months, we will examine strategies to help these kids and pursue ways to assist poor communities around the world. And then we will go, spending two months overseas. Past Children at Risk DTSes have gone to India, Thailand, Myanmar, Uganda and Kenya. On outreach, we will work with street kids, AIDS orphans, slum communities, sex slaves and refugees, as well as reach out to people of all ages through evangelism.

The Role of the Elective in DTS

The elective is an important part of DTS. We make special effort to customize the DTS so that you are receiving training related to your elective as you go through DTS. We also intentionally weave the elective into the type of ministry we do on outreach. But, the elective is not the primary point of DTS. The primary role of DTS is to disciple us to look like Jesus. DTS is designed to grow our understanding of God and His world, to deepen our walk with Him, and to share His love with the world through evangelism and mercy ministry. You should expect the DTS to stretch your comfort zones beyond your areas of gifting and the types of ministry you typically enjoy.

Children at Risk Internships (Ministry Partners)

For graduates of YWAM’s Children at Risk DTS, the possibilities really are endless. Around the world, there are over 1000 YWAM ministries working with children at risk. Every one of these ministries has one pressing problem: the vision and the needs outnumber the workers. Often, a ministry’s greatest hindrance to receiving potential workers is that people are unaware of the need and what can be done to help. Our goal is to bridge the gap between children’s ministries (like schools, orphanages, street kids ministries, etc.) and children’s workers.

Past Outreach Highlights:

Rescued from a Brothel
Read the dramatic story of the rescue of two young children from an Indian Brothel.

Meeting Jesus Under the Mango Tree
Read about a Ugandan refugee (forced from his home by the LRA) who crossed paths with our team and told us that we were the answer to his 25 year prayer for his clan.

A Day with India’s Street Kids
Read about our team providing a day of food, bathing and fun for Indian street kids.
